Thinking winter? Plan for spring with patio project

Cooling temperatures and shorter days may have you thinking about taking your entertaining inside, but the fall season is the perfect time to start planning for next spring with a new patio. Paver patios, decorative concrete pool decks, stone firepits, and retaining walls are all ideal projects for cooler weather.

Benefits of installing hardscapes in the fall, winter

As long as you aren’t dealing with frozen ground or wet, mucky soil, cooler temps are perfect for outdoor improvement projects. The benefits are many:

  • You can finish your summer parties and activities before digging up your yard for a new patio or outdoor kitchen. Construction is never convenient, but adding, repairing or replacing backyard hardscapes when you are not using your yard as much is a lot less inconvenient.

  • Installing pavers or stones and pouring concrete are jobs best done in cooler temperatures – around 50 degrees is ideal. Ground that is dry and firm is perfect for this work.

  • Speaking of dry, firm ground, fall construction work will not damage your landscaping the way spring or summer excavating will. Your plants and grass are dormant and firm ground is less likely to become rutted from heavy equipment.

  • For lawn repairs that are needed, fall is the best time to seed and fertilize for a healthy, thick lawn in the spring.

  • It’s a fact that spring and summer are busy for contractors building and repairing patios, driveways, and other hardscapes. Plan for your project in the off season and you will likely get quick installation and a better price for the work.

  • When the weather breaks in the spring, you will be using your new patio, pool deck, or outdoor kitchen. If your project includes a firepit or fireplace, a fall installation means enjoying these spaces right away.
